ADOPTED 10-23-10 – Suspected to be under three years old, this stunningly handsome, BIG BLOCK-HEADED CHOCOLATE LUG OF A LABRADOR RETRIEVER is EXACTLY THE DOG one would expect from this playful and loving breed’s lineage. “CHIEF,” as we adoringly refer to him, is FUNNY beyond his little antics, and so incredibly humorous in his exuberant engagement with every person he meets. Frankly, we just can’t stop SMILING around this BIG BEAUTIFUL BOY!

CHIEF’S days of being alone are OVER, and he’s NOW READY to be re-homed so that he can savor all his days with his special forever family recognizing the magnificence of CHIEF is easy, and he gives you many opportunities to appreciate his personality and good looks. At 100 pounds, HW negative, healthy and happy, CHIEF will make a lucky family very happy, especially if companionship, loyalty, laughter and devotion are the reasons you are looking to adopt a LAB! CHIEF especially loves playing with female dogs, and he’s not happy when bossed around by intimidating dogs, and we know very few dogs who tolerate bullying, anyway! CHIEF enjoys children and would do GREAT in a home with older kids given his large size, or if you have a very dog savvy home, and are lab-obsessed like we all are, this is a great dog for even younger kids to be around if properly supervised — as should be the case with ANY AND ALL DOGS and ANY AND ALL CHILDREN — no matter the size or age! CHIEF is just incredibly patient and would make a superb family pet . . . or a devoted loyal companion to a person who wants a “HAPPY SHADOW~!”

The most fun aspect of CHIEF’S road to rescue has been watching him blossom. Probably never celebrated as a dog should be, CHIEF learned to play and BE A DOG while in our care. Our esteemed trainer, who dedicates countless volunteer hours to ALL THE DOGS in Rescue Dog Village Guardian, Inc. shares that CHIEF is just one “Snuggle Bug of a GREAT and GORGEOUS LAB, a real love-sponge who absolutely LOVES TO PLAY, BE LOVED and LOVED BACK!” What more could one want in a dog? Truly, though, because CHIEF used to look at toys and not know what to do with them, witnessing him playing with his special ball just melts one’s heart instantly. With CHIEF around, that happens quite frequently, actually. And I suppose that’s why we rescue in the first place — because we see the huge potential in these throw-away dogs, these neglected and abandoned beauties that deserve all the love and attention and care for being WHO THEY ARE — so full of love, hope, and promise. Besides, who else but a dog loves you so unconditionally and totally? We’re happy to give these dogs the second chances they should never have needed in the first place, and in CHIEF’S honor and all the other dogs and animals who need rescue, we put our ALL into the care of the dogs that grace our lives, albeit temporarily. It’s such a delight to watch this age-appropriate, energetic and healthy dog delight in being tossed a ball, or walking beside you on a hike in the woods or for a romp in the pond! CHIEF just ALWAYS seems to be in his GLORY! That smooth and rich chocolate coat of his is also easy to groom — even after swimming, as are all labs, really. But this one, CHOCOLATE CHIEF is just the most loyal, loving and affectionate one to be around, and we can’t say enough good things about him, really.

CHIEF was rescued with cuts all over his head, and now all of them are healed and there is nary a mark left. Neglect was clearly something this dog knew too much of in his life, but that has not made him anything but even more grateful for any and all the attention he receives. Not only does CHIEF give free lessons in FORGIVENESS and UNCONDITIONAL LOVE, but he also knows a thing or two about APPRECIATION. Glancing at CHIEF, one is immediately aware of the appreciative look he sends back, and it’s CLEAR HE’S SAYING, “THANK YOU FOR PAYING ATTENTION TO ME.” Not ONCE do we look at CHIEF and that gratitude is NOT THERE — IT’S EVER PRESENT — just like him! So, if you’re looking to remember all the important things in life — let CHIEF be your primary instructor. His lessons are hard not to learn, and he’s at the HEAD OF THE CLASS! Already CHIEF knows his basic commands and is just so eager to please and willing to be a huge part of your life! There’s just this incredibly precious soft side to this HUGE LAB, and SMILING is also something one does quite a bit in this special dog’s presence. He’s just an all-around handsome hound and so easy to train and exceptional with cats even!

CHIEF would thrive in a home as an only dog — and not because he doesn’t get along with other dogs, but because he so relishes the attention that it would be incredible to see him receive what he’s so willing to give. However, a settled and easy-going female canine –large or small (he’s an equal opportunity lover, after all) would probably make CHIEF quite happy, too! Easily trainable, this deserving Lab’s luck has already changed — and we know that there is a SPECIAL FAMILY WAITING JUST FOR HIM! With such a sad and unfortunate early life, it’s GREAT TO SEE CHIEF REMAIN FOCUSED WITH HIS EYES OF THE PRIZE OF A HAPPY FUTURE, and he just greets every day as the true gift it is and wags that tail of his with a delight and appreciation that I hope to duplicate in my own life! CHIEF never fails to be happy to see any person, and is just a BIG BUNDLE OF PURE SWEETNESS — just like a chocolate candy bar, really — but the fine kind, not the dime-store HERSHEY brand! He’s luxury chocolate, if you know what we mean — not so refined (he IS FROM THE SOUTH AND IS A GOOD OLE’ BOY, after all)Please fill out an application today to be considered for CHIEF’s FOREVER FAMILY as he’s a well-socialized, eager, happy-go-lucky LABBIE BOY of great big proportions! He even walks quite well on a lead despite his big size, and is thriving with the daily and consistent training of our resident dog loving trainer!

PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE TO CHECK OUT THE SECTION BELOW

RDVG wants to provide you with as much information as we can because some of our mix breeds you might not be familiar with. The below section on “About the Breed” offers information on some of the Breed Characteristics, Children & Pets, Behavior and Personality, Temperament and more.

It is important to point out that in addition to the breed, there is an enormous variety in the way a dog acts and reacts to the world around him. In the end, your dog’s preferences and personality are as individual as you are–and if you can accept that– then you’re bound to enjoy each other.

Children & Pets

Animal Behavior Guidelines

Many children, especially very young ones, do not realize that pets are living animals and not toys. Failing to teach a child how to handle pets properly can result in suffering on the part of the pet and, in some cases, injury to the child. Taking introductions slowly will allow you to introduce family dogs and your children safely

Puppy Behavior, Growth & Development

Each stage of Puppy Growth and development is fascinating; by the time it reaches its first birthday a puppy is considered a mature, adult dog. Puppy Growth rate is fast compared to humans, just compare a puppy of 8 weeks to a baby of the same age.

One of the most common questions asked about a puppy’s growth and development rate refers to the eventual size of the puppy. How big will the puppy grow? How can you determine the adult size of a puppy? A young puppy is tiny and cute – everyone loves puppies! But will the puppy be suited to your environment? How much exercise will be required for a full grown dog? Will the puppy be a suitable pet for children? The breed of the puppy will determine the answers to these questions. A general response to the size and growth rate of a puppy and the adult size of a puppy is therefore not possible – it needs to be specific to the puppy’s breed.
