ADOPTED 10-23-10 – AND here is WOODY, the estimated 11 mos old Bullmastiff, who was sadly Heartworm Positive, but finally finished treatment to rid his not-so-little body of the dastardly worms that plagued his heart because his previous owners neglected to provide him with the monthly preventatives that would have made this reality impossible. Unfortunately, in rescue, we see this ALL TOO OFTEN, so we educate and promote not only SPAY and NEUTER as often as possible, but advocate for responsible and humane pet ownership. It’s the ONLY WAY! Our esteemed and devoted trainer, Randy, refers to WOODY as a “LARGE WALKING FOOT STOOL” and then chuckles heartily. Under a year he already weighs close to 95 pounds, and we suspect in the upcoming months, especially after his heartworms have been successfully treated, he’ll continue to grow, put on more GROCERIES and get to above 100 pounds!

True to the breed’s appearance, this fawn-colored young male known to us fondly as” WOODY” has those droopy ears, wrinkled face and a short smooth coat and long tail that are so endearing. And, what’s more, “WOODY IS HILARIOUS,” according to Randy. He remarks that WOODY is “extremely muscular, totally loveable, playful and an absolute GREAT DOG! What’s more, he will have you in stitches all the time with his little antics!” He runs straight towards our trainer Randy, apparently and does this sort of base slide to stop himself when he gets close. Randy had to slow down his talk and repeat himself as he was relaying the story because he was laughing so hard. GREAT DOG MEDICINE, clearly . . .
And it’s what we all need, and why we absolutely LOVE THIS BREED, and so do many other folks, understandably!

Found as a stray roaming the streets this beautiful and BIG Bullmastiff was rescued from the Magnolia Springs High Kill Shelter and has just the “best personality ever.” Anybody that knows Woody will tell you, “Be careful, his favorite thing to do is sit in your lap and turn over and have his belly scratched.” And it’s true. We’ve never met a dog who would be more content with that than eating or running — though, our boy does enjoy his romping and playing and long leisurely strolls where he can be the CENTER OF YOUR WORLD! WOODY is so incredibly sweet and loving that he’d prefer a kind caress over all else — even food! Like most of us in life, he just wants love! But you DO KNOW the kind of dog we’re talking about here, right? It’s the one that WINS YOU OVER INSTANTLY?

We’ve had WOODY around children, cats and other dogs and have yet to find anything he’s uncomfortable with in his presence. He’d NEVER initiate anything aggressive, but were a dog to pounce on him, he’d likely not hesitate with his big large self to show them he’s a competent boy and not just some good-looking, gorgeous ROMEO of a dog to throw around! BIG WINK! Simply put, WOODY would be an ideal family dog. Like all Bullmastiffs, Woody is a natural guardian. He doesn’t bark much, but when he does, it’s usually because there’s someone around.

The keen expression on his big square head which is darker in color than the rest of his body conveys the reliable intelligence and devotion of the Bullmastiff. Those soft, fun-loving eyes melt you instantly, and you know that this powerfully built and amazingly symmetrical and special dog wants nothing more than to BE LOVED and CHERISHED as a PRIZED family companion. Although confident, WOODY is so docile and sweet-natured and attaches himself intensely to the people he shares his life with, and is enjoying being well-socialized and trained while he endures his HW treatment. Simply put, WOODY FINALLY READY to make a special family the BEST BULLMASTIFF BUDDY around! That’s ALL THAT IS POSSIBLE for this guy given how deeply and willingly he LOVES EVERY THING AND EVERY ONE! If you’re looking for a Bullmastiff composed of LOVE — that’s WOODY — his HEART BEING THE STRONGEST THING ABOUT HIM — no matter that some damn Heartworms are taking up temporary residence there. Although, he is STRONGER THAN THOR, and you have to be able to navigate him — is that you? If so, WOODY IS READY TO SLIDE RIGHT INTO YOUR HEART — so make room! He’s a BIG BEAUTIFUL GUY!

We owe it to the dogs we rescue and all the wonderful families/adopters who might consider welcoming our charges into their hearts and home. Our dogs are waiting for that ideal forever home where they will be cherished as deserving family members. Its sad these second chances are even necessary for these dogs, but we are committed to them and will devote the time and energy to their rehoming, and not just MOVE them to save more dogs. We diligently and responsibly seek good matches as we dont want to re-home the dog again. These animals have already endured more than they should have, and through no fault of their own. It behooves us to be honest and forthright, and we appreciate the same in return from applicants. That said, youll understand why we are committed to the well-being of our charges and consider this veterinarian check mandatory. If you are a first-time dog owner, we will work with you every step of the way! ADVOCACY AND EDUCATION ARE AS MUCH A PART OF RESPONSIBLE RESCUE AS ADOPTION! And it takes a RESCUE VILLAGE to help the most dogs possible in a thorough manner to ensure success on all fronts, and then some! It is an awful feeling to fail a dog, and we cant continue rescue if we dont do everything we can to ensure good matches for the dogs and tender families who might adopt them. THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING.

Although we are an extremely small rescue group, we understand and respect your familys eagerness to be in touch and learn as much as you can about the dogs you are considering adopting. Our very experienced and devoted trainer will be happy to share all aspects of OUR RESCUE DOGS to determine compatibility once youve submitted your application, and another of our volunteers will explain the whole process of our rescue and answer any questions you might have as well

PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE TO CHECK OUT THE SECTION BELOW

RDVG wants to provide you with as much information as we can because some of our mix breeds you might not be familiar with. The below section on “About the Breed” offers information on some of the Breed Characteristics, Children & Pets, Behavior and Personality, Temperament and more.

It is important to point out that in addition to the breed, there is an enormous variety in the way a dog acts and reacts to the world around him. In the end, your dog’s preferences and personality are as individual as you are–and if you can accept that– then you’re bound to enjoy each other.

Children & Pets

Animal Behavior Guidelines

Many children, especially very young ones, do not realize that pets are living animals and not toys. Failing to teach a child how to handle pets properly can result in suffering on the part of the pet and, in some cases, injury to the child. Taking introductions slowly will allow you to introduce family dogs and your children safely

Puppy Behavior, Growth & Development

Each stage of Puppy Growth and development is fascinating; by the time it reaches its first birthday a puppy is considered a mature, adult dog. Puppy Growth rate is fast compared to humans, just compare a puppy of 8 weeks to a baby of the same age.

One of the most common questions asked about a puppy’s growth and development rate refers to the eventual size of the puppy. How big will the puppy grow? How can you determine the adult size of a puppy? A young puppy is tiny and cute – everyone loves puppies! But will the puppy be suited to your environment? How much exercise will be required for a full grown dog? Will the puppy be a suitable pet for children? The breed of the puppy will determine the answers to these questions. A general response to the size and growth rate of a puppy and the adult size of a puppy is therefore not possible – it needs to be specific to the puppy’s breed.
