ADOPTED 12-05-10 & 09-11-10: Truman is an extraordinarily beautiful and sweet 4-5 year old gentle dog who was rescued from a high kill shelter in West Monroe, Louisiana. While TRUMAN came into our rescue skin and bones, he’s near 75 pounds of pure health and vibrancy now! Fortunately, our rescue treats all the dogs that come into our car that test heartworm positive. RESCUE DOG VILLAGE is pleased to share that our stunningly handsome deep red boy has successfully finished the protocol to eliminate the dastardly worms that he should never have been afflicted with in the first place! TRUMAN IS NOW one happy and healthy dog. Make no mistake about it, TRUMAN is thoroughly enjoying life in his Southern foster home just as every one of our rescued charges are lucky enough to find themselves in this benevolently kind woman’s home. And that’s because she showers them with love, good nutrition and doting attention and healthy doses of appropriate socialization. What these rescued dogs give back in return is simply astounding. It’s almost as if they express their gratitude with every tail wag, and that means JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING to us in rescue. When we are able to see the somewhat timid and unsure dogs that enter our rescue finally blossom, it’s a joy like no other. WITNESSING TRUMAN’S GRAND UNFOLDING HAS BEEN NOTHING SHORT OF DELIGHTFUL. And to hear his foster speak of him so fondly, is a gift unto itself, really. If one ever wonders how or why these dogs can transcend some of their challenging pasts all too often filled with hardship and neglect, it’s because of people like TRUMAN’S FOSTER MOM. IT IS THE LOVE AND DEVOTION FROM PEOPLE LIKE HER THAT HELP GET THESE DESERVING DOGS TO THE OTHER SIDE and make them highly adoptable and prized companions!

A seasoned foster, TRUMAN’S temporary home has provided respite for over 110 dogs, and we can now count TRUMAN as yet one more as he’s finally ready to transition to his forever home and be lovingly adopted as a cherished family member! Currently, he’s co-existing peaceably with six other dogs and simply adores being petted and loved and sharing his days adored by his family — both canine and human! TRUMAN does excellent with children and other dogs of all sizes, and is so committed to his people and pleasing them hat he’d make a perfect match for a family that wants to enjoy the magnificence of having this special dog’s tender companionship enhance their lives tenfold. TRUMAN is EASY TO LOVE and is a great dog in every regard. His only trepidation is that he hesitates to get in the car, but when he finally does saunter up “into the saddle”, he savors the car ride fully, and is an utter joy to have on long road trips to the beach.

Cats, you ask? Well, TRUMAN ignores them completely. Sort of amazing, but TRUE! They can graze right by him, even leaning their little sleek feline bodies against him in an attempt to scent him, and he pays them no mind whatsoever, really. He’s just that focused on his people that he doesn’t have time for squabbles. Besides, he knows the rule to peaceable and harmonious living — it’s tolerance, and he manages that quite well, grateful to be loved and wanted as all GOOD DOGS seem to be in rescue!

It’s no surprise that TRUMAN is thriving in his foster home as he’s sharing digs with six other dogs and an incredibly knowledgeable woman who has responsibly re-homed countless needy dogs by prudently matching them to appropriate families, and sharing everything she knows to guarantee success and happiness for all stakeholders: volunteers, adopters and especially the DOGS – our joint reason to rescue! Besides, Happy Adopters translate to HAPPY DOGS — and that’s why we do what we do and work together and help these dogs GET THE FOREVER HOMES THEY DESERVE! We engage only in responsible and total vetting and thorough and complete evaluation by our foster and skilled trainer who also devotes all his time and energy to finding these dogs suitable and loving homes. Our strategy? Provide a nurturing environment that allows the dogs to be their best selves, provide total veterinarian care and behavioral assessment and help socialize them with other dogs that have been blessed to have the second chances they should never have needed in the first place. When LOVE spearheads a campaign, coupled with purposeful conviction and philosophy, the outcome in rescue is usually a win-win!

Altered, up to date on all vaccinations, gaining weight and getting sweeter by the day, TRUMAN is an extraordinarily beautiful dog inside and out. What we ALL AGREE on is that he’s magnificent in every way that matters. TRUMAN is a deep red chestnut beauty, and an incredibly GREAT DOG that gets along with all the other animals in the house and ABSOLUTELY LOVES PEOPLE! Sadly, his teeth are a bit worn, likely from trying to gnaw out of some kind of enclosure at an earlier time in his life. BUT THOSE DAYS ARE OVER, FOR SURE! Given his positive HW status at the outset of our rescue of him, it’s likely this poor angel was kept outside in the treacherous heat. But that’s a THING OF THE PAST AS WE SAID! At nighttime, Truman used to hesitate going outside, but he’s getting more and more comfortable with transitions and feels safe — and that’s normal for dogs in rescue–the more they trust, the more willing they are to endeavor to do new things! His sad past is just that: A THING OF THE PAST. He’ll always have LOVE, he’ll always be cared for — HE’S PART OF THE VILLAGE! No more worry. No more scorching in the sun of the oppressive Southern heat.

TRUMAN is a tender and loving animal, and we are committed to giving him NOTHING BUT THE BEST — and that includes veterinarian care and nurture from his foster, Lou and our esteemed trainer, Randy — who so lovingly works with all our rescued charges! We laugh as we watch TRUMAN play with another little Golden in our care, so much smaller than him! He’s just a “GOOD OLE’ BOY, who is HAPPY TO BE THERE,” according to our trainer, Randy, who has over 40 years of experience working with dogs in a variety of settings. And our rescue works from our hearts to our rescued charges’ hearts — dedicated to making ideal matches based on honest assessment and full disclosure from all involved. IT’S THE LEAST WE CAN DO — and these dogs deserve nothing less, quite frankly!

Recently TRUMAN and 9 other dogs had a beach vacation, and this special dog savored every moment of sand and sun and frolicked wildly and with abandon as any good dog would, happy to have some coastal coolness from the sun. A true velcro dog, highly intelligent and stunningly beautiful, this affectionate dog will make a superb companion for the right family. Our philosophy is, “THERE IS A HOME FOR EVERY DOG.” Without question, RESCUE DOG VILLAGE BELIEVES IT IS OUR DUTY, HONOR and PRIVILEGE to help place TRUMAN in his ideal forever home. PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE TO CHECK OUT THE SECTION BELOW

RDVG wants to provide you with as much information as we can because some of our mix breeds you might not be familiar with. The below section on “About the Breed” offers information on some of the Breed Characteristics, Children & Pets, Behavior and Personality, Temperament and more.

It is important to point out that in addition to the breed, there is an enormous variety in the way a dog acts and reacts to the world around him. In the end, your dog’s preferences and personality are as individual as you are–and if you can accept that– then you’re bound to enjoy each other.

Children & Pets

Animal Behavior Guidelines

Many children, especially very young ones, do not realize that pets are living animals and not toys. Failing to teach a child how to handle pets properly can result in suffering on the part of the pet and, in some cases, injury to the child. Taking introductions slowly will allow you to introduce family dogs and your children safely

Puppy Behavior, Growth & Development

Each stage of Puppy Growth and development is fascinating; by the time it reaches its first birthday a puppy is considered a mature, adult dog. Puppy Growth rate is fast compared to humans, just compare a puppy of 8 weeks to a baby of the same age.

One of the most common questions asked about a puppy’s growth and development rate refers to the eventual size of the puppy. How big will the puppy grow? How can you determine the adult size of a puppy? A young puppy is tiny and cute – everyone loves puppies! But will the puppy be suited to your environment? How much exercise will be required for a full grown dog? Will the puppy be a suitable pet for children? The breed of the puppy will determine the answers to these questions. A general response to the size and growth rate of a puppy and the adult size of a puppy is therefore not possible – it needs to be specific to the puppy’s breed.
