ADOPTED 7/31/10 MEET SAMMY, a 14 month-old beautiful pure-bred, black male Chow Chow weighing in at a happy 45 pounds of delight. Sadly, SAMMYS former owner was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and this precious dog needed to be re-homed to ensure proper care and healthy socialization. While the gentleman who used to share his life with SAMMY watched his 6 foot 4 body deteriorate as disease ravaged his life, he also witnessed the incredible strain it put on his extremely loyal and bonded four-legged friend who clearly was affected by his humans sickness. Unlike many other breeds, CHOWS bond extremely closely and tightly to their master, and unfortunately SAMMY was undeniably visibly pained in the presence of his sick human to whom he was so attached. As hard as it was, it was clearly in the dogs best interest to be removed from that intense situation. We come to understand in life, LOVE sometimes means LETTING GO. Sadly, SAMMY’S owner left this Earthly plane not long after he had been placed in our rescue, and we are grateful because this is a dog that would have had an even harder time witnessing his beloved human’s passing. So, we’re even MORE DEVOTED AND DETERMINED TO HELP SAMMY HOME . . . and are looking for the ideal place where he’ll thrive and be tended to lovingly and with just as much devotion as he’s willing to give so freely!

Our seasoned and devoted trainer who has over 20 years of dog experience under his belt and endless compassion for all dogs and humans everywhere PROMISED hed do everything in his power to help find a suitable forever home befitting SAMMY as he is truly such a deserving dog. That was the least comfort one might hope to give a dying man and now his widow. And it’s a promise we won’t break, either. Though neither wanted to part, its been easier for all to manage without the undue burdens of care giving, and now grieving. SAMMY was worrying his own little self sick as he watched his former owner struggle with his health. Fortunately, the update from our trainer is that this incredibly special and loving dog is once again regulated to a life without such intensely worrisome and real concern and is now HAPPILY ENJOYING BEING A FUN-LOVING DOG ONCE AGAIN! Sammy has no worries except when his next treat or how dirty he can get rolling in the grass with the other dogs in our care! One of the other devoted volunteers who cares for our rescued charges lovingly reported that, Sammy proudly struts around with his beautiful tail that looks like a Mardi Gras plume, playing with the Labs and rolling around with them joyfully only to return to his kennel filthy so he can enjoy being primped and brushed. Sounds like one smart dog, eh? She also reports that theres not much that can crimp Sammys style as this is a dog that so enjoys your attention, and savors being fussed over and loved on, but that he likes to act as if hes embarrassed, as if to say, Geez, do you have to give me kisses in front of the other dogs? And yet, if you stop for a moment, that gorgeous big face looks up and you indulge him some more . . . SAMMY has a grooming appointment this week to coif his red-tinged raven mane and trim up that lovely lion looking coat of his

Its pretty cute to view this medium sized handsome one in photographs with his sturdy stilted stance, almond eyes and thick fur, particularly around his neck, giving the appearance of a gorgeous black lion with a big sense of humor! Sammy is a young dog who looks for your direction and has such an eagerness to please whomever hes working with, and these are the attributes that make him a great dog who will grace the right family with his happy presence!

The inexperienced dog owner should be aware of how Chows encounter those it perceives as strangers as they are reserved and can appear aloofly uninterested. No relationship with strangers should be assumed with a Chow and not because they are aggressive, just as SAMMY is not at all. He is loving, docile and entirely SWEET — and he’s been a dream for our trainer, so easy and willing to follow commands. SAMMY even loves to do a little dance when he sees that he’s going on a walk, on which he prances proudly and happily.

SAMMY is a very socialized and balanced Chow and is neither timid nor aggressive. With an innately independent spirit, he’s just not unassuming — he’s too smart for that, and if he meets a stranger, he knows it. No kidding him! But that doesn’t mean he’s overly protective, just prudently cautious, and that’s a good thing! All in all, he is a great specimen of a CHOW, and is a very easy canine companion to have around.

With his keen intelligence and affectionate devotion to humans, we are certain SAMMY will be a great addition to the right family, especially true for those die-hard CHOW lovers who already enjoy the breed for its intelligence. CHOWS are not very active either in the sense that he will require rigorous and strenuous exercise three times a day like a young lab might. That said, SAMMY doesnt need intense play every day, but will require regularly scheduled and consistent exercise every day as does ANY dog, really. This type of exercise is require more for the CHOW because it needs mental and physical stimulation.

Sammy responds so beautifully to positive reinforcement and a soft hand, and seems to be a natural problem solver. The Chow, one of the oldest, most primitive breeds evolved from wolves is such a sturdy and regal dog, very well-mannered, polite and patient and balanced when treated with respect and consideration of their lineage and needs. Daily brushing is recommended and although their coat has a thick ruff behind the head and they are double-coated their maintenance is not overwhelming at all.

Sammy is completely house-trained, totally vetted and up-to-date on all shots and vaccinations, ready to make that special family eternally happy and content! SAMMY is currently being fostered and trained where he is thriving with daily attention and care!

PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE TO CHECK OUT THE SECTION BELOW

RDVG wants to provide you with as much information as we can because some of our mix breeds you might not be familiar with. The below section on “About the Breed” offers information on some of the Breed Characteristics, Children & Pets, Behavior and Personality, Temperament and more.

It is important to point out that in addition to the breed, there is an enormous variety in the way a dog acts and reacts to the world around him. In the end, your dog’s preferences and personality are as individual as you are–and if you can accept that– then you’re bound to enjoy each other.

Children & Pets

Animal Behavior Guidelines

Many children, especially very young ones, do not realize that pets are living animals and not toys. Failing to teach a child how to handle pets properly can result in suffering on the part of the pet and, in some cases, injury to the child. Taking introductions slowly will allow you to introduce family dogs and your children safely

Puppy Behavior, Growth & Development

Each stage of Puppy Growth and development is fascinating; by the time it reaches its first birthday a puppy is considered a mature, adult dog. Puppy Growth rate is fast compared to humans, just compare a puppy of 8 weeks to a baby of the same age.

One of the most common questions asked about a puppy’s growth and development rate refers to the eventual size of the puppy. How big will the puppy grow? How can you determine the adult size of a puppy? A young puppy is tiny and cute – everyone loves puppies! But will the puppy be suited to your environment? How much exercise will be required for a full grown dog? Will the puppy be a suitable pet for children? The breed of the puppy will determine the answers to these questions. A general response to the size and growth rate of a puppy and the adult size of a puppy is therefore not possible – it needs to be specific to the puppy’s breed.
