ADOPTED ON 05-18-23: In rescue, our main goal is to have a happy ending. For every single dog that comes our way. Countless hours and tireless work from volunteers who are dedicated to animals go into goal. Shelly’s story is no exception. Shelly was a very pregnant girl who was in an emergency situation and our wonderful southern foster dropped everything, went right to where she was, and took her home. You see, Shelly was about to give birth, and there was no way she was going to let that mama have her babies on the side of the road or in the woods while it was pouring rain.

Sadly, Shelly’s story gets worse before it gets better. It seems that she had purposely been dumped at a random house by some pretty cruel people that apparently just did not want to deal with puppies (and clearly did not care to get her spayed either).  And not only were they cruel, but the owner of the house that had called our foster said he would dump her somewhere in the woods if she was not picked up immediately!

RUN PUP RUN

NAME THE DOG WITH THE ORANGE COLLAR: Now for the good news. Shelly gave birth to nine healthy babies and are they adorable! There are five girls and one male. They are all beautiful Flat Coat Retriever mixes, born on February 17th, and like most puppies, they are little bundles of pure joy! And since they are so fun, we thought we would try something fun (and very different) when they are ready to be put up for adoption. The dogs in our care are generally named before they are posted, but this time we are going to let the adopters name them! They are currently only identified by their collar color–five females and one male. We are so excited to see these pups go to wonderful homes and loving families!

HAVING A FUN DAY

Now that Shelly is safe, warm, and being loved on, her foster mom is beginning to see her personality, and it is evident that she came from an abusive situation. She cowers when anyone goes near her, including the cats that live there! She acts very submissively, which is common in abused or neglected dogs. It’s their way of “trying to behave” so as not to be a target to the abuser. We are told she is making wonderful progress and is starting to warm up, but is still very timid. Unfortunately, she is also heartworm positive, as if she has not dealt with enough!

When considering a new addition to the family it is wise to research potential breeds to ensure a perfect fit for both you and the dog. Flat Coat It’s no surprise that the Flat Coat Retriever is one of the top ten most popular dogs in the U.S. They are highly intelligent, sociable, beautiful, and loyal. They can be slow to mature and retains the silly, playful personalities of a puppy until three to four years of age. This breed has a sweet, gentle, people-pleasing personality.

BEAUTIFUL PUPS

Like other Retrievers, these dogs make great assistance or therapy dogs and can be of great service within the communities with which they live. When properly trained, they can be helpful in many aspects and led themselves to those in need of assistance while providing the much-needed love, cuddles, and attention that these dogs also may need. Our goal for a happy ending for pup with the (collar) and make sure that she will be adopted by a loving family. We then can honor Shelly’s struggle by making sure that they never go through what she did.  When you choose your pup, we’ll have so much fun hearing all their new names!

Many rescues pass over rescuing dogs that are Heartworm positive because of the expense. RDVG find it very difficult to choose which dogs to rescue when they are HW Positive. We are committed to help as many as we can and for every HW positive dog that is adopted, we vow to rescue one in its place.
