He survived by will, intervention and God’s grace, he is extremely special and his name is Hertz. Mr. Hertz is a Dutch shepherd with a large frame (ultimately up to 100 pounds), 1-2 year old, medium long coat, perfect symmetry, excellent example of the breed. As a rescue we tend to not say much about the rescue animals past because we can do nothing about that, we can only affect the rescues future but Hertz is different. You see the notches on this young man’s ears are not from fly bites and infections but instead are man-made.
In Hertz’s case he was marked as not being “fierce” enough for this breeder and was being transported to be used as a “bait” dog for pit fighting. We intervened and “took” Hertz while he was in transport. As is always the case with our rescue we all feel in love with this character, Hertz is without a doubt is the sweetest, most lovable, gentle and open shepherd I have ever encountered. Probably it is no surprise to anyone that our boy performed extremely well in all of our socialization and training programs, reflecting high intelligence, strong people drive, excellent social skills and an affinity for children. Hertz did have some physical injuries when he arrived but all have been addressed and our boy is ready for adoption! Two positives (1) the breeder is no longer in business, (2) the breeder and others are being prosecuted. To end in a positive note, Hertz in Dutch loosely means, gentle soul, a fitting name for such a wonderful soul!
