ADOPTED 06-29-19: Inhumanely thrown from a car on Highway 59 in rural bustling traffic, this precious 18.5 pound black bundle of absolute and total LOVE was rescued immediately by our caring volunteers and fortunately has no scars from this horrific treatment — either physical or emotional. TOBY is a young, estimated 6 month old Shih-Tzu/Poodle hybrid of fun-loving fury. This little guy is so incredibly fun-loving and great with all dogs — big and small — and loves children of all sizes! Our seasoned trainer laughingly reports that this is “one happy and amazing little dog to have navigated his way through traffic and right into the hearts of everyone he meets!” Fortunately, too, he’s healthy, altered now, up to date on all his vaccinations and just as playful as can be and so tender and loveable, a little angel that crawls into your lap and perches himself comfortably there and looks at you with those big almond eyes full of adoration and appreciation for his salvation. “He’s just the sweetest little thing you ever saw,” remark the vet techs. And some of our other volunteers giggle as they comment about Toby playing with some of the other dogs in our care. “Toby rolls on top of the other dogs and they roll over him and they run around really quickly and fast and it looks like a tornado of dust swirling about because they are having so much fun at full-speed bursts!” Toby is available for adoption to his ideal home now! .

Toby just LOVES to be in anyone’s lap, and will just crawl on his belly and approach you for a rub and a pat of love! He’s highly energetic, but that exuberance is followed by long stints of nap-taking and lounging on his back to regain his composure! TOBY is extremely people-oriented and has never met a stranger and he savors the company of all other dogs, too! Our trainer remarks that he is so adaptable and easily trainable and that’s no doubt due to the winning combination of his suspected breed combination. TOBY likes being the center of attention and has fun chasing balls and butterflies! .

Highly intelligent as most poodles are known to be, it’s no surprise either that TOBY likes the water! Most people aren’t aware that Poodles are believed to have originated in Germany, where they are known as the “PUDEL” meaning, “to splash in the water.” Commonly used as a water retriever, it’s no surprise that TOBY would retain some of that fondness for water deep in his lineage as well! And his beautifully thick coat which has now been groomed considerably, is a lovely dense and curly, almost non-shedding coat, often referred to as “hair” given how incredibly soft it is on these dogs. TOBY is no exception. Even though Toby’s fur is essentially non-shedding, this should not be confused by saying he is a hypo-allergenic dog. Toby will require constant grooming, but that will be much easier if he’s clipped often and his abundant and wavy coat with it’s wooly undercoat is kept shorter for ease of maintenance! .

The suspected Shih-Tzu aspect of this happy little ball of black fur has it’s lineage in TIBET, though more commonly people think of China when this breed comes to mind. The Shih-Tzu is an active, VERY HAPPY, and affectionate breed, and that couldn’t describe TOBY more to the tee! His small and sturdy little body proudly prances around all people and other dogs, and those precious big round eyes of his have such a warmth and almost human-like quality that endear one to him immediately! One glance into your eyes and you can tell TOBY would be the most devoted and loving companion.

TOBY’s ideal home is one that would have a small fenced in yard as he so enjoys being outside for periods of time, but not as much as he savors being indoors with his family. He would enjoy vigorous indoor playr or short outdoor walks. TOBY would make an ideal companion for another dog and that would temper his energy. But as much enthusiastic playfulness as Toby has, he is still so sweetly docile and quiet afterward — a real snuggler and lover! He’s a dog that would NOT do well left alone for hours at a time, especially without another canine companion. Toby is just too spunky and deserves too much attention and care for anything less. This is a perfect little dog, looking for a perfect home — and it won’t take much, but time and a big heart and a willingness to be loved and to love. After all, that’s what matters MOST IN ANY LIFE!

PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE TO CHECK OUT THE SECTION BELOW

RDVG wants to provide you with as much information as we can because some of our mix breeds you might not be familiar with. The below section on “About the Breed” offers information on some of the Breed Characteristics, Children & Pets, Behavior and Personality, Temperament and more.

It is important to point out that in addition to the breed, there is an enormous variety in the way a dog acts and reacts to the world around him. In the end, your dog’s preferences and personality are as individual as you are–and if you can accept that– then you’re bound to enjoy each other.

Children & Pets

Animal Behavior Guidelines

Many children, especially very young ones, do not realize that pets are living animals and not toys. Failing to teach a child how to handle pets properly can result in suffering on the part of the pet and, in some cases, injury to the child. Taking introductions slowly will allow you to introduce family dogs and your children safely

Puppy Behavior, Growth & Development

Each stage of Puppy Growth and development is fascinating; by the time it reaches its first birthday a puppy is considered a mature, adult dog. Puppy Growth rate is fast compared to humans, just compare a puppy of 8 weeks to a baby of the same age.

One of the most common questions asked about a puppy’s growth and development rate refers to the eventual size of the puppy. How big will the puppy grow? How can you determine the adult size of a puppy? A young puppy is tiny and cute – everyone loves puppies! But will the puppy be suited to your environment? How much exercise will be required for a full grown dog? Will the puppy be a suitable pet for children? The breed of the puppy will determine the answers to these questions. A general response to the size and growth rate of a puppy and the adult size of a puppy is therefore not possible – it needs to be specific to the puppy’s breed.
