ADOPTED  – 01-07-12 – Delta’ was formerly known as “131Green” when she was brought into the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter in West Monroe, LA as a stray on September 13th.  She was held the required 7 days to see if an owner would claim her.  Sadly, no one came forward and Delta was set to be euthanized on her 8th day at the shelter.  Thanks to a great relationship between a Louisiana group (PAWS of NE LA) who helps animals at the local high kill pound and Rescue Dog Village Guardian, Inc. of CT, sweet Delta was saved!  Because she was a stray we don’t know anything about her history.  Delta was fully vetted and moved to foster care on Sept 22nd.  We expect to learn more about Delta in the coming weeks.

What we do know is that she is in excellent health is currently on Advantage Multi for heartworm/flea prevention, she has been spayed and her energy level is low. At this time, Delta is pretty unsure of things associated with being a pet dog.  Even though we don’t know her history, the dogs let us know what their life has been like. We don’t think she ever had a leash on until we pulled her from the pound; however she is a fast learner and responds well with a kind word and affection.  Her foster family is giving her lots of love and showing her what her life will be like from now on. She is learning about being an inside dog and we expect her to be a spoiled pup in no time!  She loves everyone she meets and is super with other dogs.

She is a bit strong on leash at this point but is learning; she is young so as she gets older and with some training from her foster mom, she will get better and better with time.  We are finding out that she is not a hyper dog but will need regular exercise to keep her happy and sane.

She has lots of wonderful qualities; she is excellent with dogs and kids. We don’t know about cats but she has shown no signs on food issues. Because she has been an outside dog, her mom is working on her house training but she loves to be loved and is so willing to please, she will catch on soon. She is a bit nervous in the car, which makes us believe she was taken for a ride that upset her but she does very well in a crate. A dog that is good in the crate is a benefit for so many reasons and for Delta, it is important that her new family has one for her. She will need a safe place to go so she can figure out all the new things in her life.

Delta has no true fears; she is just unfamiliar with many things she has been exposed to since leaving the shelter but she is adapting well.  She might hesitate or lay down when trying something new but quickly recovers to investigate.  She is learning that these new people in her life want only the best for her and bring her good things like toys, treats and soft beds.

Her new family will need to know that she needs a gentle hand to help her learn about this new life she has. Delta needs a loving family who understands the needs of a young rescue dog and can help her grow to her full potential.  Once she learns that, she will rocket to a secure dog and her love gates will open and flood her family for the rest of her life, she has a big heart and she is a very special dog.

PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE TO CHECK OUT THE SECTION BELOW

RDVG wants to provide you with as much information as we can because some of our mix breeds you might not be familiar with. The below section on “About the Breed” offers information on some of the Breed Characteristics, Children & Pets, Behavior and Personality, Temperament and more.

It is important to point out that in addition to the breed, there is an enormous variety in the way a dog acts and reacts to the world around him. In the end, your dog’s preferences and personality are as individual as you are–and if you can accept that– then you’re bound to enjoy each other.

Children & Pets

Animal Behavior Guidelines

Many children, especially very young ones, do not realize that pets are living animals and not toys. Failing to teach a child how to handle pets properly can result in suffering on the part of the pet and, in some cases, injury to the child. Taking introductions slowly will allow you to introduce family dogs and your children safely

Puppy Behavior, Growth & Development

Each stage of Puppy Growth and development is fascinating; by the time it reaches its first birthday a puppy is considered a mature, adult dog. Puppy Growth rate is fast compared to humans, just compare a puppy of 8 weeks to a baby of the same age.

One of the most common questions asked about a puppy’s growth and development rate refers to the eventual size of the puppy. How big will the puppy grow? How can you determine the adult size of a puppy? A young puppy is tiny and cute – everyone loves puppies! But will the puppy be suited to your environment? How much exercise will be required for a full grown dog? Will the puppy be a suitable pet for children? The breed of the puppy will determine the answers to these questions. A general response to the size and growth rate of a puppy and the adult size of a puppy is therefore not possible – it needs to be specific to the puppy’s breed.
