ADOPTED ON 09-07-14 – Willow eyes are the first thing that you become aware of about her but it is her sweetness that you notice and that is what will melt your heart. She is a dog that is a true joy to be around, it is obvious that she has that typical Flat Coat personality and she just wants to please in every way. She is very devoted to people and she craves human attention and wants to be as close as he possibly can be to them.

Like so many of the rescue dogs that are found, Willow, her mother and 4 other siblings were found dumped on a rural road near the woods the first week of March. They looked to have been surviving on their own for a week or more. The pups were thought to be about 8-9 wks old when they were found by a rescue angel. Their health was already starting to take a toll on their little bodies, they were wormy and emaciated. They are all not in the loving home and care of her rescuer.

Willow and her siblings are already showing the signs of their breed. Her foster dad has noticed that she is “just a real good dog”. Even at this young age, they listen and come when they are called and their foster family feels that they are really special dogs that were meant to be saved. Unlike most puppies, they told us that Willow and her siblings are relatively calm in comparison to other puppy litters. Recently they have been around little children and true to their breed, are just tremendously loving and gentle with them.

Willow loves to run and play with her siblings and she warmed up to her foster mom rather quickly. She was slightly cautious at first but warmed up after a pet and an ear scratching She gets lots of play time with her with her siblings and follows behind our ATV in the evenings. She gets along with her siblings and does well with her foster brothers and sisters dogs. She does great with kids and has been around kids quite often. She might be a large dog; her mother is about an 80lbs dog.

If you have an urge to have an instant best friend that is always glad to see you and easily maintained, you really should give this wonderful girl a look. Willow just needs someone who will love her and give her the attention she deserves.

ABOUT THE BREED

Height: 22 – 23 inches (56 – 58 cm)

Weight: 60 – 70 pounds (27 – 32 kg)

The Flat-Coated Retriever is excellent with children and a great family dog with a reliable temperament. Friendly, sweet and high-spirited, it loves everyone, even strangers. It has a puppy-like attitude and always appears to be in good spirits. It loves to play and retrieve, and with enough exercise it will be quiet indoors, saving the activity for the outside. It is an intelligent, loyal companion. This very sociable breed gets along well with dogs and other pets.

PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE TO CHECK OUT THE SECTION BELOW

RDVG wants to provide you with as much information as we can because some of our mix breeds you might not be familiar with. The below section on “About the Breed” offers information on some of the Breed Characteristics, Children & Pets, Behavior and Personality, Temperament and more.

It is important to point out that in addition to the breed, there is an enormous variety in the way a dog acts and reacts to the world around him. In the end, your dog’s preferences and personality are as individual as you are–and if you can accept that– then you’re bound to enjoy each other.

Children & Pets

Animal Behavior Guidelines

Many children, especially very young ones, do not realize that pets are living animals and not toys. Failing to teach a child how to handle pets properly can result in suffering on the part of the pet and, in some cases, injury to the child. Taking introductions slowly will allow you to introduce family dogs and your children safely

Puppy Behavior, Growth & Development

Each stage of Puppy Growth and development is fascinating; by the time it reaches its first birthday a puppy is considered a mature, adult dog. Puppy Growth rate is fast compared to humans, just compare a puppy of 8 weeks to a baby of the same age.

One of the most common questions asked about a puppy’s growth and development rate refers to the eventual size of the puppy. How big will the puppy grow? How can you determine the adult size of a puppy? A young puppy is tiny and cute – everyone loves puppies! But will the puppy be suited to your environment? How much exercise will be required for a full grown dog? Will the puppy be a suitable pet for children? The breed of the puppy will determine the answers to these questions. A general response to the size and growth rate of a puppy and the adult size of a puppy is therefore not possible – it needs to be specific to the puppy’s breed.
