PTS 03-29-11 – Slater was not able to adjust to home life. He needed someone that understood his signals but before we could get that for him, he became a risk. The decision to put him to sleep was so hard but the risk was too great. This rescuer met, hugged and kissed this sweet soul and wish that he cold have had the life he deserved. Gone too soon, we love you Slater.

HERE IS HIS RESCUE STORY

ADOPTED 12-05-10 – Meet “SLATER,” an estimated 2.5-3 year old, male Brittany Spaniel/Labrador mix that weighs in at 45 pounds of pure sweetness. He is in a loving foster home in Terryville, CT and gets along exceptionally well with other dogs. Presently, he is with about 7 or 8 dogs per day and what Slater loves is to play with all dogs. He is awesome in a crate, eats well with and next to other dogs; this lets us know that he has outstanding social skills. He does need children to be over the age of 12 but as long as he is with a TRUE leader that will run or exercise him, he will learn and do whatever he is asked by a human. Another dog is a must for Slater but it also makes him a perfect companion for adopters that are looking for a second dog for their dog.

Slater is still getting more instruction from his foster mom and dad on how to walk on a leash because he is interested in everything going on around him. We believe that because since rescue dogs have come from neglectful or abusive situations, the world is a place of wonder for them because they never had those dog experiences and are curious, like a child in Disneyland, everything is EXCITING and wonderful.

MOVIE #2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrVuLz7-Gls

He’s a true DAWG that came to RESCUE DOG VILLAGE via a high kill shelte. Our esteemed volunteer trainer, Randy, who has over 40 years experience working with dogs in a variety of settings, including the military, remarks that this “little love sponge of a dog is just good with everything: people of all sizes, ages, and genders; cats and other dogs!” And it’s true, take this dog into a new settings, and he acclimates — as long as he has his person to bond with, and his family to love; it won’t matter. He’s just so inclined to be with people and is so eager and willing to please — a true off-shoot of his suspected breed mixes. Slater has the athletic and compact, medium-sized build and overall appearance of the Brittany Spaniel. He’s elegant in appearance and so very agile in his gait and performance, so easily making his way to and fro no matter what he’s doing. If he’s going from person to person, he does so delicately and with purpose. And that’s because it’s true: Slater is just undeniably intelligent, smart enough to know that LOVE is the antidote for everything, and that’s what comprises this very dog’s foundation, of this we are CERTAIN: tender and gentle affection wrapped up in a cuddly ball of canine cuteness. Of the dogs in our care, we often don’t know much about their pasts or their histories, so we focus our attention on creating their FUTURES. And that’s easy to do with a dog like SLATER. Essentially, as long as he has humans around — throw in a canine pal or not, he’ll thrive! So, if you’ve got the time, and enough love in your heart to match SLATER’s, this might just be the dog for you. He’s simply a NO PROBLEM dog, full of love and heart!

With a moderate energy level, a demeanor that’s easy to please, SLATER is one of the friendliest dogs around, true to his Labrador heritage . . . so it’s easy to see why those of us blessed to know him favor having him around. We wonder if it’s because he is so incredibly adorable, or that he’s just consistently happy and enthusiastic with EVERYONE and EVERY DOG! “He’s just a great companion dog,” with his “soft nature that is respectful, but in no way SHY or timid.” According to our trainer, SLATER is just comfortable in an array of settings and so easy going and full of happiness. Slater’s extremely agreeable personality makes him great for a family with children. Not only does this dog exude an inner beauty, but is quite colorful and beautiful on the outside, too! This loyal, obedient and very friendly dog is just waiting for the chance to steal your heart. In the meantime, we all will continue to socialize SLATER with all our rescued dogs and people, providing him a great environment to live and throw him ENDLESS TENNIS BALLS. Truly, SLATER has a love affair with fetching tennis balls and will chase one as long as it’s thrown to him. Slater is one gem of a rescue dog, and will make a willing family endlessly happy!

These dogs deserve all of our attention, and in Rescue Dog Village Guardian, Inc., we are committed to our adopters and our dogs equally. We offer full disclosure and hope to make the best matches possible. Please know our adoption fees never cover our expenses. We rely on the generosity of our adopters and supporters to help us help the dogs.

PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE TO CHECK OUT THE SECTION BELOW

RDVG wants to provide you with as much information as we can because some of our mix breeds you might not be familiar with. The below section on “About the Breed” offers information on some of the Breed Characteristics, Children & Pets, Behavior and Personality, Temperament and more.

It is important to point out that in addition to the breed, there is an enormous variety in the way a dog acts and reacts to the world around him. In the end, your dog’s preferences and personality are as individual as you are–and if you can accept that– then you’re bound to enjoy each other.

Children & Pets

Animal Behavior Guidelines

Many children, especially very young ones, do not realize that pets are living animals and not toys. Failing to teach a child how to handle pets properly can result in suffering on the part of the pet and, in some cases, injury to the child. Taking introductions slowly will allow you to introduce family dogs and your children safely

Puppy Behavior, Growth & Development

Each stage of Puppy Growth and development is fascinating; by the time it reaches its first birthday a puppy is considered a mature, adult dog. Puppy Growth rate is fast compared to humans, just compare a puppy of 8 weeks to a baby of the same age.

One of the most common questions asked about a puppy’s growth and development rate refers to the eventual size of the puppy. How big will the puppy grow? How can you determine the adult size of a puppy? A young puppy is tiny and cute – everyone loves puppies! But will the puppy be suited to your environment? How much exercise will be required for a full grown dog? Will the puppy be a suitable pet for children? The breed of the puppy will determine the answers to these questions. A general response to the size and growth rate of a puppy and the adult size of a puppy is therefore not possible – it needs to be specific to the puppy’s breed.
