ADOPTED ON  07-26-14 – Every once in a while we get the opportunity within our rescue to work with a dog that is absolutely unique in almost every dimension, in this case it is our boy Odie. This young man came to us from a small shelter in southern Mississippi, the people there were so happy to see us, a short time later we understood why. As the shelter people brought Odie out we soon realized why they were so happy to see us, this was by far the worst smelling dog I had ever encountered and we had a 2 hour ride home. My partner in our rescue said she wanted to ride on top of the truck but if I had to endure so did she..

FULL COAT***NEUTERED***FULLY VETTED*** GREAT WITH PEOPLE
GREAT WITH OTHER DOGS*** LEASH, HOUSE AND BASIC COMMAND TRAINED.

Anyway the name Odie stuck as an affectionate nick name for odoriferous. As you might expect our boy had every bug known to man along with quite a few skin issues, thankfully we can now say that all maladies have been treated and cured, our boy also smells great! This is now one great German shepherd male that will top out at about 90 pounds, has wonderful full coat and is between 3 and 4 years of age. One look at Odie will tell the story, that face just melts any resistance you might have and trust me at this point he knows it. Our boy is a beautiful specimen of all things German shepherd, smart, happy, loving, gentle, courageous, strong bond and of course a strong but in control guardian instinct. To say Odie has a mind of his own would be an understatement but in his case it is not a negative , he is usually right, tough to admit as a trainer. Mr. Odie has passed all of our socialization and training programs with ease, in most cases he set the standard. We have found our guy to be open and engaging with dogs and extremely good with people. Odie is happiest when he lounges around the house or yard with “his” person.

PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE TO CHECK OUT THE SECTION BELOW

RDVG wants to provide you with as much information as we can because some of our mix breeds you might not be familiar with. The below section on “About the Breed” offers information on some of the Breed Characteristics, Children & Pets, Behavior and Personality, Temperament and more.

It is important to point out that in addition to the breed, there is an enormous variety in the way a dog acts and reacts to the world around him. In the end, your dog’s preferences and personality are as individual as you are–and if you can accept that– then you’re bound to enjoy each other.

Children & Pets

Animal Behavior Guidelines

Many children, especially very young ones, do not realize that pets are living animals and not toys. Failing to teach a child how to handle pets properly can result in suffering on the part of the pet and, in some cases, injury to the child. Taking introductions slowly will allow you to introduce family dogs and your children safely

Puppy Behavior, Growth & Development

Each stage of Puppy Growth and development is fascinating; by the time it reaches its first birthday a puppy is considered a mature, adult dog. Puppy Growth rate is fast compared to humans, just compare a puppy of 8 weeks to a baby of the same age.

One of the most common questions asked about a puppy’s growth and development rate refers to the eventual size of the puppy. How big will the puppy grow? How can you determine the adult size of a puppy? A young puppy is tiny and cute – everyone loves puppies! But will the puppy be suited to your environment? How much exercise will be required for a full grown dog? Will the puppy be a suitable pet for children? The breed of the puppy will determine the answers to these questions. A general response to the size and growth rate of a puppy and the adult size of a puppy is therefore not possible – it needs to be specific to the puppy’s breed.
